ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a variety of assistive technology solutions evaluated over the years to help persons with intellectual and other disabilities deal with leisure and/or communication activities independently. It focuses on technology solutions devised to help people engage in leisure activities, technology solutions devised to help people engage in communication activities and technology solutions devised to help people engage in both leisure and communication activities. The technology solutions and intervention programs reviewed were aimed at supporting either leisure or communication. In practice, the new, third technology arrangement was aimed at replacing the computer systems, microswitch and mobile communication mode with one or two smartphones. Using verbal utterances as communication means is certainly an advantage compared to using signs and pictorial representations. The technology solutions and technology-based programs reviewed can be taken to indicate that there are intervention options available for a variety of individuals with intellectual and other disabilities.
