ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the steps and approaches to perform an assessment—ensuring the correct roles and responsibilities, ascertaining independence and competency, and following the specified steps in performing the assessment. It helps to ensure assessment results are objective, consistent, repeatable, and representative of the assessed processes. The chapter performs an assessment with several goals. These can be used by or on behalf of an organization to: facilitate self-assessment; provide a basis for improving process performance and mitigating process-related risk; produce a rating of the achievement of the relevant process quality characteristic; and provide an objective benchmark between organizations. Organizations of all sizes can use this method. The purpose of process assessment in this chapter is to understand and assess the processes involved in project management within organization. In terms of the strategy for collecting and analysing data, each assessment must identify the assessment activities, roles, responsibilities and competences, classes of assessment used, and the rating and aggregation methods.
