ABSTRACT

The desire to take on more responsibility within the school is driven for most teachers by a wish to have a wider impact than is possible within the confines of their own classroom. The standard approved model envisages teachers collaborating in the management of the curriculum, with each area of the curriculum being led by a teacher who takes responsibility for that subject throughout the school. Time needs both to be available and to be flexibly arranged if the coordinator is to work with different colleagues throughout the school. Job descriptions often remain unrevised for years even though an annual review is now essential to ensure their relevance and accuracy in rapidly changing circumstances. The frustrations of operating within a situation determined largely by someone else acted as a spur to seeking promotion to a job with more influence, more power and hence more opportunity to have a yet wider impact.
