ABSTRACT

In spite of the increasing predominance of headship as the top job in primary education, there will be those who either do not wish to become a head or who, having been a head for a number of years, will wish to move on. Only a minority of the retirees had actually reached retirement age with two-thirds of them leaving early for either health or 'efficiency' reasons. Jobs equivalent to those of the Local Education Authority( LEA) adviser/inspector and officer also exist with Diocesan Boards of Education which are responsible for voluntary schools and colleges. The Education Act 1992 reorganised the Inspectorate as the Office of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools, popularly known as Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED). In reality the work of an educational psychologist is much more wide ranging and typically involves working with individual children, families and schools; providing in-service training; advisory work with the LEA and schools; and research and development work.
