ABSTRACT

One of the assignments required the students to reflect deeply on their thoughts, values, attitudes and behaviours – what they were doing, had done and would do – based on their own cultural values. The journey of recognizing their cultural sense making demanded that the students be very sensitive to and aware of their thoughts, feelings and actions. Culture affects the entire decision-making process. Multinational corporations need to acknowledge the influence of culture on management practices because self-initiated expatriates (SIE) will bring their own cultural attitudes and uniqueness to their new company. The growing number of SIEs further intensifies the challenges faced by multinational organizations because people searching for better career prospects are increasingly willing to relocate in order to obtain competitive salaries or compensation packages – or to experience the pleasure of a new country. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
