ABSTRACT

The chapter begins with a monologue of the 9/11 Twin Towers attack in New York and progresses to a discussion of the distinct properties of urban terrorism. The chapter describes the nature of outgroup distrust and reviews the potential causes and consequences of urban terrorism on trust in government, trust in other countries, and trust in the outgroup (e.g., Islamophobia). The chapter includes some caution regarding the degree to which researchers are able to identify with certainty the causes and consequences of a given historical event. The chapter culminates in a description of interventions (educationally based and direct social contact) that have the potential to counter or offset urban terrorism.
