ABSTRACT

The chapter begins with a monologue depicting an individual’s betrayal by a work colleague. The chapter reviews research which confirmed that trust in co-workers and organizations has both direct and indirect effects on an individual’s functioning and the success of his or her organization. The chapter reviews the social exchange approach, which addresses trust between co-workers, trust between workers and employees, and the role of perceived justice in those relationships. The chapter draws upon research on aggression in the workplace to provide an insight into the issues of workplace trust. The chapter culminates in the discussion of the research on the complex interplay of trust and monitoring on workplace functioning.
