ABSTRACT

The Economic Sciences Nobel Prize was started by the Swedish Bank and awarded for the first time in 1969. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Parliament, whereas others by Swedish institutions. From the members of the parliament, five persons are chosen to play the role of the 'Nobel Peace Prize Committee'. The documents of the Nobel Institute show a fascinating story about the role played by Indian politicians, the British Empire, and the media against Aga Khan and in favour of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. For instance, Swede Hedlund argued that it was the first time in the history of the Nobel Prize that a candidate was unanimously nominated by a Legislative Chamber. Hedlund, being a Swede, was well informed about the rules and regulations of the Nobel Foundation. The potential Nobel Peace Prize winner was aware that newspapers in Norway and Sweden mentioned his name in connection with the peace in Turkey and the Near East.
