ABSTRACT

The Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC) provides the high-end computational resources for researchers in South African academia, science councils and industry. The status of the CHPC as a national high performance computing (HPC) facility for South Africa is reflected well in the diverse research application areas being studied on the Lengau cluster. The user base of the CHPC may be classified into one of four classifications, viz. South African academic institutions, South African public sector institutions, South African industry and other African partner academic institutions. The Center for High Performance Computing, as the National Facility, supports large-scale science projects around the globe. The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) is an interesting project that South Africa is hosting, which will be the largest Radio telescope in the world. The training program is named the SKA Readiness project, and also includes the strategy of re-purposing the HPC systems when they are decommissioned, and provided as single racks of computing to various countries.
