ABSTRACT

This chapter defines self-assessment and explains why it is a valuable strategy to teach to your students. In it, we argue that self-assessment

helps students develop agency within learning and assessment processes;

encourages students to engage in a process of self-regulated learning; and

acts as an invaluable source of just-in-time feedback for students that supports improvement.

The chapter highlights the range of definitions and practices subsumed under the banner of self-assessment, pointing out the importance of using self-assessment in the classroom as a way of engaging students with the external criteria describing quality work.
