ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies six challenges that must be addressed when using self-assessment in the classroom. The chapter provides strategies to mitigate these potential problems and to minimize naïveté in enacted practices. We argue the following:

Students must be encouraged to take responsibility for self-assessment processes.

Teachers must strive to make complex learning objectives transparent so that students are able to apply these to their work.

Teachers must create psychologically safe classroom environments where truthful self-assessment can take place.

Students must be encouraged to move beyond their egos when evaluating the quality of their work.

Steps must be taken to support accurate and valid self-assessment responses.

Students must be empowered to use and act on self-assessment data.

The chapter argues that teachers should continually foreground the importance of students using their own self-assessments in strategic ways that enable them to self-regulate and improve their learning.?
