ABSTRACT

Most films are divided into two categories: studio films or independent films. The primary difference between these two comes down to money. Studios have access to multiple ways of providing capital for a film. Independent producers must raise their own. Studio films are always union films. Even if a production takes place in a right-to-work state, union rules still apply if a major studio is attached. An independent film may be union or non-union, depending on the budget and where the production takes place. In addition to the studio system and the world of independent filmmakers, it is important to understand the use of limited liability companies (LLCs) in the entertainment industry. LLCs are used in two different ways: to organize a business surrounding a film, or to organize a business around a specific individual. The film office must demonstrate knowledge of the industry, ability, and willingness to work with the studio system.
