ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to understand what Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is and its importance and shows how PSHE education contributes to the wider curriculum aims of creating successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. It seeks to understand who is responsible for the delivery of PSHE education and how PSHE could be organised in schools. PSHE education covers many topic areas, such as drug and alcohol education, relationships and sex education, economic well-being, personal safety, healthy eating and mental health and emotional well-being. PSHE education is all about what is ‘personal’ and it is the element of PSHE education that can be the most off-putting aspect of the subject for a beginning teacher. The ‘social’ aspect of PSHE education is fundamentally about relationships. PSHE education should encourage young people to appreciate that ‘health’ is more than just being free of disease or illness; it is about reaching their full potential in physical, mental, emotional and social terms.
