ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on transition at age 11, i.e. Year 7, but transition ages may be different in the region in which teachers are teaching. It aims to understand the experiences and concerns of primary pupils as they enter secondary school. The transition between primary and secondary school is an important life change that affects learners’ attainment and well-being in the long term. The English National Curriculum documents for primary and secondary schools state that there should be time and space to develop each child in order that they become ‘educated citizens’. Primary school pupil transfer documents can be very useful as the primary teachers know the pupils well and have built up a detailed knowledge of them. Check the primary school transfer documents for teachers' pupils and gather as much information about the ‘real’ child, such as their interests, clubs they have joined and their physical activities, through meeting them on induction days and meeting with their parents/carers.
