ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how activities supporting learning outside and beyond the classroom can be used as effective tools to facilitate and enhance pupils’ learning and teachers' are teaching. It aims to help teachers, as a teacher new to the profession, gain an understanding of how innovative approaches to learning beyond the classroom (LBtC) can facilitate a transformative learning experience for pupils. Whilst fieldwork is a tool for encouraging and embedding learning experiences, LBtC is a term that encompasses a myriad of out-of-classroom learning designed to enhance, extend and stimulate a love of learning across the curriculum. LBtC includes a broad range of learning activities away from the school–locally, nationally and internationally, on the school site but beyond the classroom, and class-based through the use of new technologies. LBtC provides opportunities for teachers to be innovative in creating active learning experiences. Conduct a whole-school audit to identify opportunities that take place for LBtC for all subject areas.
