ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Russian Arctic ports are the gateways for the production of the mines and oil and gas fields. Ports are essential to the development of Arctic shipping. Their numbers and density are strategic factors for the development of the Northern Sea Route. The Russian part of the Arctic has been subject to numerous analyses focusing on its shipping attractiveness, profitability and renewal of the fleet of icebreakers and on port development. The development of the Russian Arctic ports is considered as the cornerstone of the Russian Arctic strategy. The Automatic Identification System is a system designed to monitor ship movements that was made obligatory by the International Maritime Organization in 2004. The existing flows between these two ports is mainly comprised of tanker and general cargo. Murmansk is the connecting point between the Arctic ports and the rest of the world port network.
