ABSTRACT

This chapter offers 10 ideas to Jumpstart! Drama through the exploration of poetry. Using drama conventions in poetry is very similar to that of story. You need to look for poems with strong themes and enough content to provide the children with areas to explore. Drama conventions can be used before, during and after reading the poem, supporting prediction, sequencing and engagement with character. It is important to choose the moments for drama carefully, applying the conventions that best suit the purpose of the work you want the children to do. This is slightly more difficult with poetry because poems are generally shorter and the children may need more talking though into the techniques.
