ABSTRACT

This chapter describes tension flow rhythms arise in response to biological as well as psychological needs. It also describes these rhythms in detail in their pure form, and noted that infants and adults engage in need-serving behaviours in individualized ways, mixing rhythms together reflecting their temperament. The tension flow attributes of rhythms make up key elements of temperament that emerge in life and affect individualized patterns of emotionality, activity, attention/persistence, and positive and negative effects. As Janet Kestenberg Amighi described, tension flow attributes are also notable for their contribution to self-regulatory processes throughout life. Tension flow affects play an important developmental role in providing the substrate for coping not only with internal feelings but also with the broader environment. Tension flow can range from an extremely contracted muscle tension in high intensity bound flow to extremely unconstrained muscle tension in high intensity free flow, wildly free.
