ABSTRACT

Explanations for the rise of globalization include the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and China’s entry into world markets in the 1980s. Other important factors were the emergence of modern communications technology and the Internet. Globalization puts the concept of the nation state under pressure. In particular, welfare states in Europe have come under pressure. The wave of migration that occurred during the first decade of the 21st century further increased pressure on the economic system that formed the basis of the welfare state. Stiglitz, the Nobel laureate in economics, who defends capitalism says: “Globalization today is not working for many of the world’s poor”. Piketty and others have shown that globalization and free trade have led to increasing economic inequality. The free trade and the free market economy that are embedded in neo-liberal ideology have established Mamounia as a reality.
