ABSTRACT

The tools used within the refinishing industry are generally expensive; however, with correct cleaning and maintenance, they will provide years of trouble-free service. Refinishers don’t have too many different types of hand tools to worry about maintaining. There are basic tools such as screwdrivers and spanners for stripping components; air tools such as dual-action (DA) sanders, mini grinders and belt sanders; and electrical tools such as polishers, grinders and heat lamps. Tools such as DAs should also have the backing pad checked for condition. If it is in poor condition, a new pad should be fitted – seek help with this if required. There are many electrical tools that have been thrown out simply because the brushes have burnt out. These are a service item which many people do not understand how to change, and indeed some electrical tools are supplied with spare brushes and instructions on how to change them.
