ABSTRACT

In order to apply paint in a consistent manner, a pressure gauge should be used. There are many different types of gauges. As the air and paint are mixed together after being emitted, suction-fed spray guns are known as ‘external mix’ spray guns. Besides the spray gun having a normal compressed air hose which is used to atomise the paint, the pressure-fed pot is also supplied independently with compressed air, which then pressurises the system. Before the advent of high-volume low-pressure spray guns, there were conventional spray guns, which were designed to atomise paint into an extremely fine mist, then propel that mist onto the panel at great velocity. This way of applying paint gave excellent finishes but was particularly uneconomic in paint consumption. Historically, spray booths were designed to simply provide fume extraction and warm dry air for an ideal environment in which to apply and dry paint.
