ABSTRACT

This chapter describes governor’s choices amongst the main roles that can be chosen within those tasks and stages. It discusses the place of governors in school management structure. These two topics aim to help develop a complementary 'usness' between governors and the principal and staff. A consultant with expertise is helpful for the provision of advice during planning and this advisory role can also be continued into the organisation and implementation stages of management. Headship can be a lonely job and governors can provide important support and independent advice. The governor-consultant is the one with expert knowledge which can be of use to the school. Governors can choose to adopt the role of director, consultant or representative or a mixture of all three according to their interests and knowledge. They can be seen as the framework within which the structure of school management operates.
