ABSTRACT

Selecting governors and staff is an expensive process but it is an important task. The staff and the governing body will have to decide what new posts are needed and whether or not replacement staff will be sought for any vacancies that have arisen. Children of all ages wanted kind, friendly, cheerful, patient staff who maintained order in the classroom, were not sarcastic and who were knowledgeable about their subjects and could make them interesting and varied. A committee of governors and staff, sometimes helped by local authority or other experts, will look through the applications and select a small number for interviewing. Candidates are often given an opportunity to see the school and to meet some staff and governors. Ideally, the governors working on a selection should represent different areas of the school's management or should represent different groups within the governors.
