ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the translation of the theory of the role into the reality of work within one school. It explores the potential for informing other aspects of the job. The chapter identifies messages for others who may venture into advisory work. It considers the expectations of the Local Education Authority (LEA) – the prescribed/described role; the perception of some schools and it own perceptions – the perceived role; and the real profile and content of the job – the actual role. The work of advisory teachers differs according to the LEA, and the phase or curricular area to which they are assigned. Thus, 'advisory teacher' is a title which can be, and is, interpreted in a variety of ways, even in one authority. At a County level the advisory teacher assists in the development and implementation of curricular aims and in the planning, organisation, administration and delivery of the County based in-service training programme.
