ABSTRACT

According to Machiavelli, the first impression that one gets of a ruler and of his brains is from seeing the men that he has about him. When they are competent and faithful one can always consider him wise, as he has been able to recognise their ability and keep them faithful. Efficient administration seen in the planning of lessons, establishing and servicing the needs of different classes and teachers, as well as the completion of reports and marking assignments, is essential to underpin the day-to-day activities of a timetable in action. A head of department needs to be a super-professional, able to respond flexibly to changing circumstances in a spirit of genuine open-mindedness rather than political dissimulation. As important members of a hierarchy within a complex social organization, heads of department may exhibit signs of role strain. Thus he tends to become more concerned with organizational values which emphasize order, co-ordination and other aspects of the needs of organization.
