ABSTRACT

This personal account of experience starts from the premise that heads must accept that the effective management of change is one of their most important tasks. Within a context of ever increasing pressures they must extend their knowledge of “self” before proceeding to the enabling of individual staff development and motivation. A team approach to decision-making and the evaluation process is seen as a vital prerequisite to the introduction of the crucial principle of partnership which involves not only staff at all levels in the school but also the other interested parties – “the stakeholders” – in the wider community.
