ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a factual account of the nature and dimensions of grant-maintained status. It is included to enable the reader to have a clear, conceptual understanding of what it means for a school to be grant-maintained. It considers the nature of grant-maintained schools, which schools can apply for the status, how the schools are funded, what it means for staff to work in a grant-maintained school and how a school becomes grant-maintained.
