ABSTRACT

Roger Perks, Headteacher of Baverstock School in Birmingham provides some thoughts and practical guidance on leadership style and establishing a grant-maintained school ethos. He describes the background to the school and the local community and outlines the reasons why the school opted out. Baverstock School was amongst the first eighteen schools to become grant-maintained in September 1989.

Roger Perks starts from the premise that achieving grant-maintained status does not automatically ensure a good school. He goes on to demonstrate that the opportunities and flexibility it offers provides the means fora school to develop into an effective school.
