ABSTRACT

Jennifer Morris, Headteacher of Southfield School in Kettering describes the management of staff development in a grant-maintained school. Southfield School opted out in April 1990. In this chapter she demonstrates the freedom of a school determining its in-service programme. This is initially described in terms of staff development with an emphasis on teaching staff. This school-based programme is centred on the role of the professional tutor in Southfield School. While this approach is practised in many LMS schools, it is early days for grant-maintained schools and the case study demonstrates how school-based staff development is moving. The way in which the personnel function may be enhanced in the future as schools become more experienced in self-management is discussed in Chapter 11 .
