ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at some of the practical problems which might face the new head of a school where the idea of collegiate management is unknown, and examines the strategies that headteacher might employ in order to introduce it. Headteachers who still seek to keep their governors quiet with reports packed with detail about drains and sports reports but which never mention major curriculum or management issues, are courting disaster. By efficient management and good staff development it should be possible to make each member of staff feel confident across the whole width of the curriculum. The chapter provides an overview of the main management issues in primary schools. Ann Welton would explain what collegiate management actually involves, and invite suggestions as to how future decisions will be made. The staff are unused to the idea of collective management and a collegiate approach.
