ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the processes of identifying the range of activities which might be found in the primary school and suggests that a school profile can help with this process. It looks at what is expected of the school is only one part of the picture and examines the capabilities and interests of the staff, perhaps by producing job descriptions. The chapter argues that effective school management can enable people to make the best use of staff in primary schools provided that it is clear to all colleagues where the school is going and what part they have to play in helping the school to move in that direction. A crucial element in the deployment and development of staff in the primary school is the job description since this provides each teacher with a reference point for her own work in the school.
