ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the stages in making an appointment from the point of view of those in the school in which the vacancy has occurred. It covers many aspects of the appointing process which are relevant to those seeking to be appointed to posts in primary schools. All primary school staff ought to be aware of the appropriate stages necessary to fill a vacancy. Every vacancy presents the headteacher with an opportunity to make a series of choices. The Post Project Report suggests several headings under which information ought to be provided for applicants for secondary headteacher posts. When the application forms start to arrive the final stages of the selection process are uppermost in the mind but the forms should be considered very carefully. The usual procedure is to read through the applications and references with the object of eliminating the unsuitable candidates and identifying the probable interviewees.
