ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief description of some of the equipment available for data analysis, and makes some general proposals about the organization of the work of analysis. It consists, largely, of notes on the operational details of data analysis, and not on the interpretative analysis by the application of various kinds of statistical tests. At an operational level, there are five main ways of handling the data: analysis direct from the forms; transfer of the data to plain cards; the use of Cope-Chat cards; the use of punched cards; and the use of electronic computers. Cope-Chat Cards have holes along each edge. All cards are passed through the machine and separated into twelve boxes corresponding to the twelve possible positions of the holes punched in the column. The tabulator is a much more elaborate machine than the sorter. More elaborate tabulators have various auxiliary devices, the most important of which are the 'rolling feature' and the 'distributor'.
