ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns an adequate conceptualization of Christianity. In fact, many made use of the Christian Bible. People would not identify the immoral sexual and economic traffic of the riff-raff among them as Christian, but to the newly impressed Africans diverse modes of Christian conduct could give a confusing image of Christianity. Most respondents charged Christianity with at least some negative impact on Nigerian life. For 'Christianity', 'impact', and 'tropical Africa' are terms which evoke quite varied, even contradictory images in both academic and lay minds. People look at African conformity to western Christian standards in the matter of modesty in dress as an achievement, yet they read reports of inspiring Christian life among other peoples which do not conform to western standards of modesty at all. To identify the virtuous with Christian and the vicious with pagan is so unrealistic as to be meaningless.
