ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the miscellaneous occupations and pursuits of the Basutos. Hunting used to be an important activity, both as a form of sport and as a source of food, and was one of the major pastimes for young men. Many forms of economic employment are those which have been created as a result of European contact. Of the first, the only important ones are those connected with political affairs. The second type of employment arises from the demands of the Administration, mission societies, trading concerns and other European institutions, for clerks, interpreters, messengers, and others. A third and more important type of employment is that provided by European industrial, commercial, mining and farming activities beyond the borders of Basutoland. This encourages tens of thousands of men and women to leave their homes every year and contributes as much to the material prosperity of the country as all the other economic pursuits of the Basuto together.
