ABSTRACT

For conception, the vital essence comes from the Spirit of God. Failure to conceive may be due to a number of causes such as mechanical and promiscuity. Sterility may also be due to physical abnormality, to the malevolent action of departed spirits or to sorcery. Conception does not at first interfere with the woman's domestic routine. This is gradually modified, and, as her time approaches, she drops her heavier tasks. It is a popular European belief that African women give birth easily. But there is medical evidence to show that Basuto women took precautions because they are well aware of the dangers of childbirth. The mother and child are confined to their hut until the child's navel string dries and falls of. When they are allowed to go out into the courtyard, a small feast may be held as a "thank-offering" to the ancestor spirits or to God, and to reward the midwives for their services.
