ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the learning and teaching of vocabulary. After a brief introduction to foundational concepts, we summarize pertinent theories of vocabulary knowledge and their implications for teaching. Then, we offer a review of 10 salient research articles that focus on incidental vocabulary learning, explicit vocabulary instruction, and the role of tasks, scaffolds, and technology in vocabulary teaching; a summative table provides a quick overview of the focus, context, and methodology of each selected study. We describe the implications of these research articles for the teaching of vocabulary and conclude the chapter with a summary of theory- and research-driven activities for vocabulary teaching.
