ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the learning and teaching of pronunciation. After a brief introduction to historic and more recent developments about this skill, in Section 2, we summarize three basic pronunciation theories followed by their implications for pedagogy. In Section 3, we offer a critical review of the 10 most salient research articles that have addressed the learning of different aspects of pronunciation in a variety of contexts. This section also includes a summative table that provides an overview of the focus, context, and research methodology used in each study. Then, to make connections between research on second language (L2) pronunciation and its teaching more explicit, in Section 4, we describe specific implications of these research articles for the teaching of pronunciation. We then summarize the most commonly used data collection and analysis techniques in research on pronunciation in Section 5. In Section 6, we conclude the chapter with theory- and research-driven activities for the teaching of pronunciation.
