ABSTRACT

The chapter presents examples of women’s movements, organisations and groups in Kenya, which have fought against patriarchal structures and ideologies. The authors also focus on women’s involvement in the Mau Mau struggle to further move onto women’s organisation and groups in Kenya and through the post-independence and second liberation movement. This case study will demonstrate how these women’s groups and organisations have in various ways resisted patriarchal systems as well as marginalisation during the struggle for independence and post-independence Kenya. Moreover, this contribution documents women’s struggle to resist patriarchal structures through policy review and constitutional change with the participation of grassroots women’s organisations. Ultimately, the chapter offers a means of rewriting the dominant narrative regarding African women as merely passive objects or victims, changing these perceptions and working towards dispelling stereotypes.
