ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the similarities in goals and methods between poets and Poetic Inquirers, suggesting that the line between research and poetry and between science and art is blurry, and instead, may best be described as a collaborative and reciprocal enterprise. It describes the process, method, and craft of Poetic Inquiry. The chapter deals with researchers’ goals for using poetry in their work to put the use of poetry in qualitative research practice in context. Poetry can be used as a tool and method for presentation of research data, as a source of data, and as a source for data analysis. Many poets’ inspiration and sources for poetic projects resemble qualitative researchers’ uses and considerations for Poetic Inquiry highlighting a false dichotomy between the humanities and social sciences. Poetic transcription is a method of using poetry in research as representation and analysis.
