ABSTRACT

A commonly held view on assessment at school is that it occurs at the very end of the learning process. Students are given instruction on a certain topic by their teacher, they make exercises, do their homework, study the course material, and then take a test to show what they have learnt. If the connections between learning and assessment are properly exploited, assessment can be a most powerful tool for enhancing student achievement and development. Summative assessment can be the main criterion to allow a student to pass a course, obtain a diploma, go to the next grade, enrol in a particular school/university/college. Any type of assessment that is described as summative will have some influence on the student’s learning. For individual teachers and school teams who aim to use assessment to provide students with adequate support and promote learning, additional information as to what exactly led to a particular student performance will be useful.
