ABSTRACT

In 2016, I was given a small development grant from Birmingham City University to pilot the ‘data verbalization lab’; a space for colleagues, students, and community members interested in experimenting with research data. On conclusion of the course I was approached by (one of the attendees), Birmingham-based music producer Richard Campbell (aka Natural and Secret), to work in partnership with a view to creatively adapting my research. The outcome resulted in the production of ‘Silenced’, a jazz hip-hop fusion that became the first ‘data verbalization’ story. Important here, was the adaptation brought significant new attention to my original research as it was widely distributed on several social media platforms and digital music radio programmes. This outcome further pushed the boundaries of my approach to ‘performance driven research dissemination’ and brought it to a new heightened prominence. However, a range of issues now emerged.
