ABSTRACT

Ethno-mining is a method first discussed in R. Aipperspach et al. and developed in K. Anderson et al. that enables researchers to study human behaviour and culture through combining ethnography with data mining tools and techniques. Ethnography is the study of individuals, groups or communities in their own environment over a long period of time. The world is observed from the point of view of research participants rather than the ethnographer and stories are told through the eyes of the community as they go about their activities. The two approaches may appear very different, but ethno-mining enables them to be combined, integrated, interweaved and used together to form a more complete picture, understanding or interpretation of the behaviour or culture under study. Ethno-mining is used by researchers approaching their work from a number of disciplines including the computer sciences, the humanities and the social sciences.
