ABSTRACT

Learning analytics refers to the process of capturing, exploring, analysing, visualising and reporting data about learners. This method is used to gain insight into learners and the learning environment, to improve teaching and learning practice and help with retention and support. Learning analytics are also used in business by companies interested in professional development and in assessing, managing and developing corporate education and training. S. Slade and P. Prinsloo provide a detailed and enlightening discussion on ethical issues and dilemmas associated with learning analytics, along with a brief overview of the purposes and collection of educational data, and the educational purpose of learning analytics. Motivation: set benchmarks and goals, promote self-regulated learning, encourage progression and enable students/employees to view how they are performing and how they can improve. Personalisation: provide personalised learning plans, develop personalised learning materials and find suitable learning resources.
