ABSTRACT

Location awareness refers to devices that determine location, and to the process of delivering information about a device's physical location to another application or user. Location awareness and location tracking are used by researchers from a number of fields and disciplines including the geographical sciences, the social sciences, health and medicine, travel and tourism, engineering, transportation and logistics, environmental protection and waste management, telecommunications, marketing and advertising, business, gaming and robotics. There is a wide range of hardware, software and digital tools available for researchers who are interested in location awareness and/or location tracking. Some of these are aimed at the general public, in particular, those who want to track family and friends, whereas others are aimed at researchers, the health and social care sector or the business sector.
