Information and Communication Technology and Sustainability

ByCesar Marolla

The 1987 report entitled “Our Common Future,” the Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987). Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have great potential for environmental sustainability and its applications support the transition toward a circular economy by raising awareness on ICTs and advocating for innovative solutions that can ensure a sustainable future. The importance of ICT tools to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) and create a sustainable world is a real and pressing one (Hilty et al., 2006).
