ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses some of the changes and continuities in the ethnic media sector thus far. It summarizes the contributors’ responses with the hope that their insights might inspire new research on ethnic media and further the discussion about their roles in contemporary societies worldwide. The new media landscape creates more stress among producers, as they frequently lack resources and know-how to take advantage of new technological affordances, new ethnic media usually find themselves dependent on the infrastructure of new media conglomerates. Typically, ethnic media are smaller organizations, and because of this, they are likely to be more vulnerable to the frequently intense market dynamics and competition between major rivals in the larger media industry. Continuing digitalization of the media industry in general and the ethnic media sector in particular is expected to have both positive and negative consequences.
