ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I reflect upon how I was included—my voice heard and listened to—and how I have directly experienced democracy as a participant in the Nordic Network for Music Education's international master seminars. I also explore how, together with others in the different roles of NNME, the contents, themes and methods of our seminars have developed, intertwined with an inclusive, equal and democratic atmosphere. This chapter begins with a picture of my journey from participating as a master student, through the role of PhD student, teacher, keynote speaker, member of the NNME steering group, and application writer, which also functions as a red thread through the chapter. Next comes a theoretical discussion of underlying philosophical principles, and thereafter follows a section where inclusive, equal, and democratic music education in practice is challenged and critically discussed. Finally, I share some thoughts about the future, revealing the different angles of inclusion, equality and democracy that have characterized my participation in NNME seminars across an 18-year period.
