ABSTRACT

This chapter emphasises the importance of getting formal agreement to reimbursement first. In the third edition, Jack Russell referred to a comprehensive report that is available from the Chartered Institute of Building, Ascot, and Berkshire, called 'Effects of accelerated working, delays and disruption on labour productivity'. Attempts to avoid extended hours by use of a 'shift' system can result in wasteful 'overlap' time for both men and supervisors. High levels of pay associated with accelerated working may actually cause an increase in absenteeism. As density of labour increases, so does congestion of work faces, particularly if other trades are suffering from similar conditions. Coordination and control become much harder.
