ABSTRACT

Disruption can occur whether or not there is any delay to progress. In simplest terms disruption could be described as 'being messed about'. The result is usually a reduction in planned labour productivity. The scenario includes one or more of the following: interrupted and out of sequence working, piecemeal activity, return visits, excessive overtime working and congested workface. Many subbies have been driven to insolvency this way. The typical causes include inadequate building progress, lack of progress by other trades, late information, late and/or excessive variations, delays or obstructions by the Client or his direct Contractors. Another cause can be compressed working enforced by the Contractor in an endeavour to catch up lost progress. These and other circumstances are listed in most standard forms of subcontract as matters giving rise to an entitlement to reimbursement of the loss and/or expense incurred.
